The Swingbridge 2 community boat has now arrived at Molesey Lock to start a 4 month volunteer programme with the Thames Landscape Strategy and our partners. Part of the Surrey Care Trust, the Swingbridge project gives people the chance to gain new skills whilst carrying out environmental work on the waterways. The project now has two boats; Swingbridge 2 having been launched this summer by special guest Charlie Dimmock. The project consists, in the winter, of three days a week out on the boat carrying out environmental works along the rivers of Surrey. As well as regular volunteers, the project also works closely with the Surrey Probation Area taking out offenders on community work. During the summer, the boats take out local community groups on day trips to give less mobile individuals a chance to access waterways.

During their time with the TLS, Swingbridge will be carrying out maintenance on our towpaths. Starting at Hampton Court Bridge and working upstream to the Hurst Park Millennium Monument, the volunteers and offenders will be carrying out important habitat management works as part of the TLS Partnership rotational programme of management of the towpath. They shall also be rebuilding a stag beetle loggery to provide nesting areas for the stag beetle and planting a native hedge to improve habitat for nesting birds and insects and act as a wildlife corridor.
They shall then be heading to other parts of the TLS area and we shall keep you updated with their progress.
