The Thames Landscape Strategy and London’s Arcadia braved the heavy rain on the 12th May to attend the Richmond Fair. The TLS marquee had expanded to three tents and had a variety of information about current projects on display. A very successful part of the day was the art activity, where children (and adults) were invited to decorate a section of a home made reedbed. The end result is a very colourful panel, highlighting the variety of species that reedbed habitats support.
Across the UK, up to 40% of reedbed habitats were lost between the years of 1945 and 1990. Reedbeds are therefore considered a nationally scarce habitat and are a priority habitat for conservation in the UK and the London Biodiversity Action Plans. The Thames Landscape Strategy and London’s Arcadia have secured funding to reintroduce reedbed habitat at suitable sites along the tidal Thames, so next time you are out walking the towpath keep an eye out for some of our work.
For further information about reedbed habitats, visit the London Biodiversity Partnership website and the London Wetland Centre at Barnes.
