The Water Framework Directive, which is being implemented by the Environment Agency in England and Wales, is a new piece of EU legislation which establishes better ways of protecting rivers, lakes, groundwater, estuaries and coastal waters. The Thames Landscape Strategy has been chosen to sit on the Water Framework Directive Liaison Panel for Thames River Basin District, representing the three ‘River Thames Partnerships’ in the London region.
The Directive, one of the most important pieces of environmental legislation relating to waterways in recent years, will introduce a single way of managing water, based on river basin planning. A key aspect of the legislation is the involvement of interested parties and local communities in the process of developing sustainable management plans for river basins so that long-term improvements to the aquatic ecosystem are achieved.
